Sketchbook: Done and posted!

Before Christmas I joined "The Sketchbook Project", the 2012 world tour, which is a constantly evolving library of artists' sketchbooks from across the globe. It works like this: When you sign up for the project you choose between a few themes, a sketchbook is sent to you, and you fill it with whatever you want really. Once finished you send it back (by today..), and in April it starts its grand tour around the world! It will travel around libraries, and each book has a its own barcode so you can keep track of yours and where it goes. After that again it ends up in the Brooklyn Art Library, where it will stay.. forever?

What a cool idea.

Here are some of the pages for you to have a sneak peak at, eventually the whole book will be digitalized by the library. Oh, and the theme I chose was right up my alley: "A path through the trees".

a little bit of business

January is a good month for organizing and get your head back where it belongs. The way I work now I change between my hobbyjob (thanks to Kine for that word!), which is in a flower shop, and my illustration work. I like doing both, but it can also be quite challenging jumping from one thing to the other. Especially if you keep everything floating inside your head. So I found out I needed to make myself a little system to get all my projects in order. In one place to give me a sense of control and know-what-to-do-next. I always keep lists and write down all my ideas, but somehow it’s not enough. The lists are endless and don’t leave me with a feeling of a "mission completed". So what I did was making project sheets (inspired by the flower shop!) to keep track of all commisions and projects, small or large. On these I fill in all information and steps needed to accomplish each project, the deadline (I give myself one if needed!), and I’ve made little boxes that I can tick off along the way... A small thing perhaps, but it really gave me a sense of peace and control, and I have a clearer view on what’s next on my list. Once finished I will archive it so I can check later for example how long time I spent on a project. Simple, yet feels pretty good!

Here’s another nice sheet (above) I found a while ago made by Penelope Dullaghan. It’s like when you put it on paper it feels more real.

This is Mira. She was the dog of my life.. As a golden retriever she lived up to her breed’s reputation and was a great family dog. She was everyone’s best friend (ok, not to cats perhaps) and an invaluable member of my family for 12 years. She died a few years ago, but I gave this drawing of her to my parents last year to "keep her" in our home. It is how I remember her, with that warm and gentle look.

Here we are again, less then a week left before Christmas. How come it arrives so suddenly every time? I feel like time is spinning faster each year, is it possible? Anyway, these last couple of weeks of the year I take a little break from drawing to work extra in a flower shop. It’s really hectic, but has its charm:) So, I just wanted to take a moment to wish everyone a calm and sweet holiday, remember to take care of each other- and yourself too:) And I’m looking forward to meeting you in the year to come.

Today has been about chilling on the couch, listening to good music and browsing the web for inspiration and ideas for Christmas gifts. After staying up until early morning, dancing and having fun at a Christmas party last night, I think this was the best way to spend a Sunday.

I wouldn’t mind finding one of these under the tree.. The coloured ‘Splash’ pillow from Fine little day makes me smile:)

And this book looks like a dream. Both in words and photos. Photographer Pia Jane Bijkerk creates a very beautiful atmosphere in her pictures, just look at these....

backyard christmas market

Last Sunday some fellow designers and I arranged a small Christmas market in the backyard of Baluba Illustrasjon. Well, luckily we had set up everything inside as the weather was storming.. But we tried to decorate the backyard and make it welcoming, and we were happy to see so many people showing up! Inside they got a cup of "gløgg" to warm up on before they could wander around and look at our goods; Prints, original drawings and photos, Christmas cards, handmade porcelain, vintage underwear (!) and lots more. We certainly enjoyed ourselves, and I hope everyone else did too:) More photos on our Baluba blog too!

And look at these cute ‘to & from’ cards I got from Kathrine! With my name on it and everything. I have the best studio mate;)

Presenting the calendar

Here’s the result of our Baluba calendar project, we picked it up from the printers last week, and have been busy sending them off to participants and clients! We are very happy with how it turned out, so here are some examples for you to have a look at. And if you would like to buy it, leave me a comment here or get one straight from my epla shop!

This is my illustration for the calendar, we were all illustrating the same theme; ‘If I dared I would...’ And I would tame an elk and call myself queen of the forest! I enjoyed making this image by mixing drawings and photos, making a digital collage which I haven’t done that much before.

This is the last page of the calendar where we’re presenting all the illustrators/artists that have contributed. There’s a different artist for every month, and I got May as I wanted:) The layout and design was made by me and Kathrine in Baluba Illustrasjon, and the calendar was printed locally.

So, 2012 should be a good year, right?

This is my contribution to the 2012 Baluba Calendar Kathrine and I are working on. Now as we have all the illustrations we just need to put it all together and send it off to the printers asap! It will be fun to see how it turns out, and I wonder what month I’ll end up with.. May would be nice as I’ve drawn wood anemones, and I always picked them for my birthday- which is also in May...Didn’t think of that when I put them there:)

So I’m still finishing up my illustration for the calendar, but these are the two drawings I’ve been working with. I did a foolish mistake by forgetting the format for the calendar (guess who decided on it too, haha) when doing these.. That’s why I’m still working on it then.

Wear it like a crown

Wow. Cirkus Cirkör. What can I say but thank you! I was so lucky to see this amazing show yesterday called Wear it like a crown with Circus Cirkör, a Swedish nouveau cirque. To me it was a breathtaking, beautiful and humorous experience. Visually and musically stunning with a story exploring fears and loneliness, and about turning them into possibilities..

A show about wearing your fears and failures with pride.

Wearing it like a crown is inspired by and also named after one of Rebekka Karijord’s songs. I had to buy her cd The Noble Art of Letting Go, and when playing it today I was straight back in that wonderfully strange feeling Cirkus Cirkör gave me yesterday. I hope they come back soon:)

Thinking of it, the show came at the perfect time, as I’ve been working on my illustration (above) for Baluba’s calendar competition with the matching theme If I dared, I would... And I would like to live in the forest, and maybe tame an elk that I could ride on through the path of trees... and if I could I would sing like Rebekka Karijord:)

When I draw people I tend to seek inspiration from the fashion scene. Colours, wild hair and strong contrasts.. I like it when it’s dreamy and surreal, it’s a place to explore the human body, shape and textures. The top sketch is something I found in an old pile of drawings, and I felt the urge to do some more.

LOVE how this guy uses his pen and ink, I couldn’t possibly pick out a favourite to show you, so you’ll have to see for yourself;)

I love my studio.

I love having a studio. I’ve been here since April but it still feels like I just moved in. Apart from the fact that there’s a lot more stuff on the wall by now.. It feels good to have my own space, a retreat outside of home, somewhere I can create and make a good mess if I want to. Surrounded by inspiration and a good colleague. I feel lucky:)

PS: Forgot to say my website is up and running again. Plus I’ve signed up for this cool sketchbook project - more about it later! I strongly recommend you check this out if you like to draw;)

Hello folks, just a little note to tell you my website hasn’t been working properly lately- but I’m trying to fix it and hopefully it should be up and running shortly.

I’m enjoying busy days with some fun projects at the moment, but cannot show too much from them yet. One of them is making a kids activity booklet for a local bank, and this is a collaborative project I’m doing with Kathrine. I like being two about it, I think it’s interesting to mix styles like that and you’ll have the double amount of ideas;)

Thanks also to my epla customers, it’s very interesting for me to see what pictures you like- then I know what to make more of:)

Here are some of my favourite things that brighten up my home at the moment:

Calendar competition!

Me and Kathrine at Baluba Illustrasjon got this idea a while ago to make a 2012 calendar together- then thought, why not ask other illustrators/artists to join us too? So we blogged about it here, and requested ideas for a calendar theme that we now have chosen.. In english this would be:

If I dared, I would...

So I challenge you to picture this and take part in this fun, little competition of ours! With me and Kathrine doing one month each, we need 10 people to draw the rest.. But we would like as many as possible to join in, and we are thinking of putting up a small exhibition with all the work too!

Last day for entries is 30.09.11, and work can be sent to me as a pdf or jpeg to kristta[at]online.no. You can send several examples if you want to. Follow us at Baluba for more info, or leave me a comment if you need it in english:)

Illustration in Fett magazine

Fett, a Norwegian feminist magazine just published their 2nd issue, and inside it you can find one of my illustrations:)

The article I was asked to illustrate discusses the documentary Paris is burning (by Jennie Livingston) and the politics in drag culture. The film portrays queens and competitors of the drag ball subculture of New York. I had a great time researching and looking through funny clips from the film, the characters are really something..

I was asked to do a collage for this commision, which I really enjoyed as I haven’t made one for quite some time. I did it by mixing good old cutting and pasting (you know, with scissors and such) as well as putting the last parts together in Photoshop. I wanted the image to portray how the characters of the film seem to have many faces; Where as a drag ball competitor you are judged upon your ‘realness’, how well you play your role. It made me wonder who is the real person behind the drag?

Also, I learned what voguing is and that it didn’t come from Madonna:)

Portrait of Ella

My last portrait of cute Ella that I finished some time ago (but couldn’t share before it was received by the mum:). For these kind of drawings I use slightly harder type of pencils (2H-HB) for the fine hair and lighter shades, then add the softer pencils to get the darker contrast in the eyes and background. When I draw like this I get into a certain mode, almost a meditative state of mind. Music is a good friend when doing this, and it makes me forget about time and space...

Crin Blanc - an observation

I was watching this film yesterday; Crin Blanc: Le Cheval Sauvage by Albert Lamorisse, beautifully filmed in black and white and set in Camargue, south coast of France, where the white horses live... A combination that I couldn’t resist. And as my camera was lying next to me, I instinctively started to take snap shots as the film was running. So I can’t really take the credit for the photos, but I wanted to share with you the atmosphere in the film.. A meeting between a horse and a boy and their fight for freedom.

I forgot to tell you that I won a cool little art competition last month, one that was arranged by the talented Tasmanian illustrator Beth-Emily. All I had to do was to enter my favourite colour on her blog, which at the moment seems to be burgundy - and now she has made a beautiful picture from it, the red robin as you can see above. I love it, and can't wait to receive it! I already have one of her other prints, Odette, so that's a little collection already... What I like about her work is the combination of detailed, layered drawing mixed with graphic shapes and beautiful colours. I recommend a closer look here and there!

These are old photos but I still wanted to share them. I’ve always loved b/w photography, and use them alot as references to my drawings. I also feel that taking photos is good practise in terms of playing with composition, and I like it when the photos turn out "imperfect"; when it’s blurry or you get a sense of movement...

By the way, the lioness is actually a stuffed animal from the National Museum of Scotland.. The rest of them are hopefully still alive! (Living in the Edinburgh Zoo).

New studio!

Friday was my first workday in my new studio in Meierigata 4, Bryne! From being a dark, little used storing space it has turned into a bright and inspiring room in where creativity is about to happen.. :) The studio is attached to what used to be the old pharmacy in Bryne, a really nice old building (sorry I forgot to take a photo of it!) that is now used as a sort of health centre, called Helsehuset Viben. I found this place when I started doing yoga there last summer, so I got two good things in a go! Now I can do yoga in my breaks and prevent that stiff neck that usually comes with my profession. Brilliant:)

And I just had to throw in this picture below from last summer because it made me remember how the sun feels!

Natural History Museum Oslo

These are some of the photos I took when I visited the Natural History Museum in Oslo, the same weekend as I attended Grilldagene. I immediately wanted to sit down and draw as I walked in, I’m fascinated by the details, patterns and textures of each animal. Of course I prefer animals alive, but still it is a great opportunity to study them closely. Luckily I had my camera with me, and I almost took a picture for every step I walked in there:) Which gives me a good new addition to my animal reference library! I work a lot from photos, and when photographing I approach the object from every angle possible, up close and far away, looking for exciting compositions for me to draw. Next time I’ll bring my sketcbook too!

Oh, and they also had a fun (and possibly scary for some..) exhibition with sculptures based on a children’s book by Jo Nesbø, called D.D.S.Ø.I.F; Animals you wish didn’t exist. And yes, I’m definately happy they’re not to be found in our world (yet;).

This illustration was made by a good friend

-and old classmate- of mine, and I just wanted to share it with you! What I love about her work is the use of black and white, shadow and light- just look at how the hand is in beatiful contrast to the black block of ink. Here she has used quink ink, which I had totally forgot about and need to get a hold of again. You get a kind of faded effect of the ink as it goes from black to blue and brownish yellow.

Grilldagene and new studio!

Anette Heiberg, Svein Nyhus & Åshild Irgens

I’ve just started to settle again after a great weekend in Oslo, where I attended Grilldagene last Saturday. This is a yearly arrangement set up by Grafill’s Illustration group, and luckily I managed to come along. It was an inspiring and fulfilling day, thanks to the girls who put the seminar together, and of course the speakers. Fig Taylor, Illustrator agent from the AOI started off with good advice on how to approach the Illustration market and the importance of presenting yourself and putting together a clear and consistent portfolio. The follow up was Gorm Kunøe who gave us a quick course on sale; how to get rich as an Illustrator... Just to find out there are no quick tricks, but it’s important to CALL OUT and say HERE I AM! And find those clients (wherever you’re hiding, I’ll find you;)..

Katja by Petra Börner

Last, but not least, London based Illustrator Petra Börner shared her experiences in the field, showed us sketches, working progresses and different ways of using Illustration. All in all these speakers represented various parts of the Illustration world, and the result was a seminar well worth visiting!

To sum up I learned that you can go far with a strong and consistent style, look for clients constantly and in forgotten corners, see illustration elsewhere than just in books and magazines- plus I found out that I have great Illustrator colleagues! :)

Sunday I met up with blogger and Illustrator Gunvor Rasmussen and we had a nice chat and lunch at the cool café Ryes in Grünerløkka. Check out her cool monsters and "pretty ladies" on her blog, plus more pics from Grilldagene here:)

She also adviced me to visit the Natural History Museum, where I took so many photos it needs its own entry (will post soon).

Oh, and I almost forgot- I’m moving into a new studio in April! Me and Kathrine Kristiansen are going to share the space, and we just started painting. More on this too later!

Puh, I think I need a cup of tea now.. Maybe you’ll join me?

I had such a great time today when my good friend Gjertrud Marie invited me along to check out this exhibition by Aud Bækkelund and Birgit Eide at Bryne Mølle. We were absolutely charmed by the religious birds, funny ideas and the original use of everyday objects. Gjertrud Marie, who is an artistic florist (in my words), was studying the techniques and materials used in the works, while I was fascinated by the illustrative look of the objects. And all the great shadows.. They were like drawings of their own:)

I’ve started to take product photos for my shop that will be up on epla.no (the Norwegian equivalent to etsy.com) shortly- I’m only struggling to put prices on everything, which I always find stressful... Anyone with some good advice for that? Then please let me know:) Until then you’ll have these photos as a taster. I would also love your tips or wishes for any other ways to use my illustrations! Although I still haven’t tried out half of my own ideas... More to come, in time..

Today was great.. Had a long breakfast, worked, went to yoga, found some treasures in a secondhand shop and visited my dear friend who runs Studio Blomst where I couldn’t resist this beautiful branch of Magnolia and a more than delicious chocolate (with love)!!

And to finish it all I went to a very funny seminar by Laurie Rosenworld (who came all the way from New York!). Amongst the things I learned was that you can draw eyeballs on anything and it works:)

It’s a good way to start the new year by sorting through old stuff! It feels great when you’re done.. I found out I have quite a lot that shouldn’t be dusting away in my folders, so I’m picking out prints and originals that I can put up for sale online and try to get into a café or gallery. So please give me a shout if you know about anyone who could be interested;)

Right now I’m also working on a few illustrations for IRIS, who I did a project for last summer. More on this another time, now enjoy the weekend!

Look at this twin tree! I LOVE the forest; trees and leaves and all that lives in it, the smells that change from day to day and season to season. It was such a cosy atmosphere, with lots of nice people visiting, Christmas lights everywhere, homemade snacks and a good mix of handcrafts and gifts. Me and my Mikla sisters are arranging a new event, once again in Bryne (Rogaland, Norway); our own little Christmas Market! I’ll be there with some of my prints and Christmas cards. You can also find beautiful porcelain cups and vases, Photography, flowery things and other handcrafted gifts. There will be "juleknekk" and "gløgg" (snacks and mulled wine:) to keep you warm and cosy!

The Christmas Elk

My favourite animal has entered Studio Blomst, and with him came Christmas:) This beautiful flower studio is always worth a visit, but especially this time of the year. It's a hectic time for florists, and I have lots of great memories from working here last Christmas! Late hours and the weirdest sense of humour..

It has an atmosphere that just needs to be experienced:) You'll find it in the centre of Bryne, where you'll be welcomed by the lovely owner Gjertrud Marie! More inspiration here:)

What am I doing?

Right now I’m jumping from one project to the other (this is usual for Illustrators..); Designing Christmas cards, drawing a dove tatoo, fixing an old painting and getting it reframed, preparing to start a new painting portrait... In other words; being a busy bee! Which is great of course, but sometimes I wish I could be more like this fellow (above).. The Christmas cards need to be ready for printing soon, as I’m planning to sell them at a Christmas market I’m arranging with MIKLA at the end of November. There will also be prints for sale and hopefully another few things that I’m trying to get done- plus of course products of the other MIKLA ladies! I will post more on this later, so if you live in Bryne or nearby, keep that weekend free:)

Mikla exhibition 16-18 september

This weekend (starting Thursday) I'm showing some work together with 10 women working in various creative professions; we call ourselves MIKLA. We were inspired to do something different for the local potato festival, so we've arranged an exhibition where we interpret the potato (!) as well as showing who we are and what we can do! I had the honour of making the poster where all of us are presented in "potato-bubbles"... Some practical info in Norwegian:

Mikla er en gruppe kreative, skapende kvinner som med denne utstillingen ønsker å få presentere seg selv og gi en liten smakebit på hva vi driver med.

Vi jobber stort sett alle alene til daglig, og på utstillingen bidrar vi med det vi har å tilby. Utstillingen har innslag av blomsterbinderi, kranser, brukskunst i keramikk og porselen, tekstiler, illustrasjoner og fotografier som alle er inspirert av poteten, fargenyansene i poteten, eller miljøet rundt poteten. Grunnen til at vi valgte temaet "Poteten" er jo selvfølgelig fordi utstillingen er en av hovedattraksjonene under årets store Potetfestival på Bryne. Vi anbefaler alle å stikke innom og ta en titt; store som små. Kornsiloen er vakker i seg selv og fortjener å bli sett, men med våre kunstneriske bidrag blir dette en opplevelse du må få med deg!!

IRIS/ONS 2010

Last week the centre of attention was at ONS 2010 here in Stavanger. It is a yearly gathering for the oil and energy industry and one of the world’s leading meeting place of its kind. I was asked by IRIS to decorate their stand there, and did this by making 3 colourful banners. They're a mix of hand drawn and water colour illustrations all put together in Photoshop. It was quite challenging to work with such a large scale (each banner was 90x220cm), and I don't know how many times I lost my temper with the computer.. But I survived and was pleased with the result, and more importantly was the people at IRIS. Here it is:

IRIS had a drawing competition for children where they asked them to draw their thoughts on CO2, alternative energies and our future regarding this. The drawings were put up next to my banners, so I was in good company!

I've always loved going to the library; being there and getting lost in all the stories and pictures. I forget the time when I'm there too. I wanted to share with you some the images I was drawn to this time. All the colour photos are taken from a book about a Norwegian/Swedish designer duo; Arne & Carlos. I like what they say about the chandelier; that it was made out of pure boredom one evening. It reminded me that it is important to give yourself the space and time to think for yourself (no distracting tv..), so yes; it's ok to be bored now and then. It's necessary. The beautiful drawings are taken from a book about Norwegian drawing Artists (published by Tegnerforbundet). So, have a look..

Mongol Rally

A good friend of mine is going on a crazy journey. Soon he will drive all the way from Scotland to Mongolia- just like that. Alongside the experience he is doing it to raise money for charity (Mercy Corps), or as he says himself:

"It’s about being stupid enough to drive
all the way to Mongolia in an entirely unsuitable car for the benefit of people
who are less fortunate than us."

I love it, what an adventure!
I would also like to encourage anyone to support him with some pennies (or more!), as he's not got too much too start with! He's a guy who doesn't ask for much, and I would love for him to have the greatest time:) So take a closer look at his website here! I will keep you posted on his trip as he rolls...

I'm doing fun stuff like framing and sowing these days. What I like about it is that I don't have to think too much about it; just do it and there is an immediate result! Design for Haiti

This Sunday there will be an exhibition and auction in Oslo called 'Design for Haiti', where design is sold to support the people of Haiti. Unfortunately I can't be there on the day, but I have contributed with one of my pictures (below). More info in Norwegian:

Søndag 30. mai 2010 arrangerer Miksmaster i samarbeid med DogA og Grafill utstillingen 'Design for Haiti' i DogAs lokaler i Hausmannsgate i Oslo. Profilerte norske designere og kunstnere som blant andre Magne Furuholmen, Pia Myrvold, Camilla Prytz, Unni Askeland, Nico Widerberg og Knut Bry bidrar med arbeider som utstilles og auksjoneres bort. Pengene går uavkortet til Redd Barnas arbeid for ofrene på Haiti og blant bidragene finnes alt fra fotokunst og trykk til klær og tilbehør.

Med andre ord kan du finne god design og gjøre en god gjerning på en og samme dag:) Du kan lese mer her og se noen av bidragene på flickr. Jeg oppfordrer alle kjente og ukjente i Oslo til å ta turen innom på søndag! Under finner du adresse og tidspunkt. Se opp for en gul hest;)

Wolf or sheep?

I don't really know why I started drawing these wolfs. They turned out to look very different from each other too! On Friday I went out drawing sheep instead, quite a different subject. Like the opposite animal really. It's been a while since I've drawn moving animals, but I really enjoyed it. Have a look at my studio blog to see more:)

Tegnekunsten

Above: What am I made of by Olga G. Nilsen, from the exhibition Tegnekunsten (The Art of Drawing) that I visited last Friday at Agder Kunstnersenter. It was showing a good variety of drawings; from life drawing to cartoons, illustrations and detailed studies. Quite interesting for me as I use drawing as my main expression. Alongside the exhibition there was a seminar with the same title, where I enjoyed the company of other artists and talking pencils, inks, paper... Here's a little peek into the exhibition:

For some unknown reason there seemed to be popping up sheep around this exhibition.. Nice stuff in the streets too:And back to Stavanger again!

Hyungji Park, 'Strange Scenery'

What a beautiful weekend. It was the first few days of that Spring warmth. Thank you Sun! (I like the fact that I live in Sola, which is Norwegian for the Sun:)

Sunday I went to an exhibition opening at Nordisk Kunst Plattform and met the lovely painter Hyungji Park. She is originally from South Korea, but now lives in London. And at the moment she is exploring Norway! I really enjoyed her collection of work that she has called Strange Scenery. She has put these playful images together inspired by random photos, cartoons and magazines, using oil paint and collage. And I love the result. You can read more about her work here, and if you happen to be in Rogaland you should drop by and see it for yourself. Nordisk Kunst Plattform is run by a sweet artist couple that live and have a gallery at Brusand togstasjon, which is an old train station. That makes it worth a visit in itself! And after, do like me and hit one of Jæren's beautiful beaches.

Marchmont Gallery

Just before I left sweet Edinburgh last year I was lucky to leave some prints and drawings for show in Marchmont Gallery. Now they have just updated their website and included an artist list, and here I am:) I am very pleased to have my work with them, as the gallery has a lovely atmosphere, good work and nice people. It feels a bit like home, as I got to know the Marchmont neighbourhood well while living in Edinburgh. I miss it! So if you are an Edinburgher or just in town, it's worth a visit. Or just drop by online.

Colours of Easter

It's pretty good working in a flower shop. I love it actually; being surrounded by beautiful colours, sweet smells at the same time as I get to be creative. It also means I bring flowers home more often! So now it's all yellow around here. Not too much though, as it's quite a strong colour, and I'll probably be bored of it once Easter's gone... But for now I like it for it's colour of Spring and energy! And while I'm on it, I just received a lovely package from Miss Ballantyne including an orange cream and my favourite handcream. She makes the loveliest products of herbs and oils, or 'food for the body' as she says. Just had to share it:) Food for the body is found here. And that was that, I wish you a happy, or at least relaxing, Easter. God påske!

Pets on the beach

Today I brought my pets to the beach. Yes, all the dogs and my two white horses. With no other animals (or people) around they had plenty of space to go wild. They loved it, so I probably should do it more often. Maybe I'll bring the sketchbook next time, although I think the camera did the best job today:) This is for all you lucky pet owners, enjoy!

I just wanted to share with you an old drawing from my very early days, and as you can see the love for dogs (and all animals really) has always been shown through my drawing:) I remember repeatedly drawing both dogs and probably most horses, and was very frustrated when I got it wrong.. Now however, I find it very charming!
